My lessons blend the best of two contrasting worlds—Japan and the Netherlands. Having lived half my life in each country, I’ve embraced Japan’s rich musical traditions, with their precision, sensitivity, attention to detail, their focus on form, and their structured approach to learning. At the same time, I’ve absorbed the open-minded creativity and progressive spirit of my home country, the Netherlands—a culture that values modesty and directness, honesty and transparency, practicality, and a no-nonsense approach to problem-solving.
My teaching philosophy is about finding the right balance between these worlds: structure and freedom, focused yet fun. But also finding the perfect balance between a faithful and correct interpretation and your own personal expression.
With over 35 years of experience as a piano teacher, I’ve had the privilege of guiding many students on their musical journeys. I’ve learned how important it is for each student to have a personal goal. Whether it’s playing your favorite piece on the piano, preparing for a concert, an exam, entering a competition, or being admitted to a school or university – having a clear goal provides direction and motivation.
